Teledensity, internet subscription and broadband penetration surge: evidence of Nigeria’s Telecoms impressive performance

In recent times, the performance of Nigeria’s telecom operators has become so impressive and evident in their operations and service delivery, according to statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as the regulatory body.

Freedom Post reports that statistics of the industry performance for the period of April 2021-March 2022, showed impressive results in key areas of their operations used to measure the industry performance.

For instance, the active telephony subscribers and teledensity, which is calculated on a monthly and annual basis showed an increased performance with the teledensity increasing from 103.79% in February 2022 to 104.54% in March 2022 while the active telephony subscribers moved from 198,123,431 in the same period to 199,558,540.

The active telephony subscribers and teledensity curve had been on an up and down movement during the COVID-19 and post COVID-19 period as well as during the National Identity Number (NIN) registration.

Similar performance was recorded in the broadband subscription and penetration during the period under review as broadband subscription increased from 78,082,273 in February 2022 to 80,678,301 by March 2022 while the penetration witnessed an improvement of 40.91% to 42.24% under the same period.

On the contribution of the telecoms industry to the Gross Domestic Product, the NCC statistics showed a percentage increase from 11.94% in Q3 2021 to 12.61% in Q4 2021.

Also porting activities which is the number of numbers ported from another service provider’s network into a service provider’s own network continue to witness a decline dropping from 3,151 in February 2022 to 2,202 in March.
