Unknown gunmen have allegedly killed an army officer identified as Major Churchill Orji.
The incident was said to have happened on Sunday.
It was gathered that the soldier was killed while on duty at the Azia axis in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the Anambra State.
A schoolmate of the deceased, Leonard Edu, confirmed the development to journalists on Monday.
He said, “He was my senior in Agulu Boys Secondary School. He was our labour prefect then. It’s true he was killed by unknown gunmen at Azia in Ihiala.
Another source in a tribute message said, “Rest in peace my brother from Nneogidi village, Agulu. Major Churchil Orji was killed on Sunday at Azia/Ukpor while defending the South-East from marauders.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, when contacted on the telephone said he had yet to receive any report about the incident.
“I don’t have such a report before me,” Ikenga said.
